The Bean Nobody's Watching: How Small White Beans Became Africa's Sleeper Export

Across the highlands of Oromia, the lowveld of Zimbabwe, and the hills of Rwanda, a modest crop has been quietly building one of the continent's most underappreciated export stories. It doesn't carry the glamour of coffee or the scale of cocoa. But the small white bean — known in trade circles as the navy bean, haricot bean, or pea bean — sits at the center of a global protein market worth close to $5 billion, a UK import appetite measured in the hundreds of thousands of tons, and an African supply base that is only just beginning to organize itself to compete.


## What exactly is the product?


Small white beans are a specific market class of the common bean (*Phaseolus vulgaris*) — small, oval, pure-white dry beans, distinct from the sugar beans, kidney beans, and speckled varieties that dominate African household plates. Trade names vary by geography: navy bean and pea bean in North America and the UK, haricot bean across Anglophone Africa, Michigan pea bean in breeding circles, and "teebus" in South Africa.


Agronomically, the small white bean is the highest-yielding market class of common bean per hectare in East Africa, with a productivity ceiling of around 1.5 tons per hectare, and a growing cycle of roughly 85–110 days depending on altitude. It thrives between 600 and 2,200 meters above sea level — a band that runs straight through Ethiopia's Rift Valley, Rwanda's highlands, and the Kenyan and Tanzanian bean belts.


## A history built on canning


The modern small white bean trade in Africa was born in a factory, not a field. Bean canning in East Africa dates to 1937 in Arusha, Tanzania, when European and American varieties were trialed for canning quality and exported raw to Europe, since no local canning capacity yet existed. The breakthrough came with Mexican 142, a cultivar introduced to Kenya and Uganda in 1960. It performed well enough in Kenya to seed the region's canning industry, before being exported onward to Ethiopia in the 1970s — where, despite disease susceptibility, it found strong demand in European and Middle Eastern markets and became a major national export.


Ethiopia's own bean export history stretches back over 50 years, with a dip after 1976 followed by a rebound to $17.9 million in export value by 1989/90. Rwanda took a research-led path: between 1985 and 2012, the Rwanda Agriculture Board and ISAR, working with CIAT, released more than 90 bean varieties — including the navy-type cultivar CAB 2 ("Nyiramata"), still grown by farmers today.


## Uses of the product


Small white beans serve two parallel markets. As a canning bean, they are the industry standard — in South Africa, small white beans hold the single largest market share of any dry bean class, almost entirely under contract farming with canning companies. As a household staple, they're boiled and eaten across East and Southern Africa, often intercropped with maize or cassava. A growing third use — pre-cooked, quick-cook, and pouched formats — is emerging directly from a consumer pain point: long cooking times and the fuel cost of cooking dry beans are pushing urban consumers toward canned and pre-cooked alternatives.

## Africa and global market potential


The numbers make the case for taking this crop seriously. The global navy bean market was valued at $4.8 billion in 2025, projected to reach $7.6 billion by 2034 at a 5.3% CAGR, driven by plant-based protein demand and processed food growth. Within that, canned baked beans alone — the flagship end-use — is estimated at over $2.1 billion in 2025, while the broader canned beans category spans anywhere from roughly $2.9 billion to $8.9 billion depending on the research house, growing at 3–6% annually toward 2030–2035.


The UK dimension matters directly for a UK-Africa trade bridge: the United Kingdom consumes roughly 359,000 tons of beans per year — about eight times South Africa's entire domestic dry bean consumption of 45,000 tons. That gap is the opportunity.


On the supply side, Ethiopia has emerged as Africa's dominant pulses exporter, shipping over 350,000 metric tons of pulses annually. Its haricot bean export trajectory tells the growth story on its own: export value rose from $31 million in 2016 to $624 million in 2020, with volume climbing from 58,000 to 923,000 metric tons over the same four years — a more than fifteen-fold jump in value in less than half a decade.


## Which African countries produce it


- **Ethiopia** — the continental leader; production reached 513,000 tons in 2014, more than doubling since 2005, concentrated in Oromia, SNNPR, Amhara, and Benishangul-Gumuz

- **South Africa** — small white/teebus beans hold the largest market share of any domestic bean class, grown mainly under canning contracts

- **Zimbabwe** — navy beans grown almost exclusively under contract for canners including Cairns Foods, Olivine Industries, Africa Preserves, and National Foods

- **Rwanda** — a research-driven bean sector producing roughly 580,000 MT of beans annually across all classes, with dedicated navy-type varieties in the breeding pipeline

- **Kenya** — structurally import-dependent for canning-grade beans, with processing capacity for 400+ tons a year running at roughly a third of that due to local supply shortfalls

- **Tanzania** — the historical birthplace of the East African canning-bean trade

- **Uganda** — a Mexican 142 recipient alongside Kenya in 1960, still producing for food security and processing

- **Malawi** — a regional producer serving local and cross-border markets


## The InterAfrica potential


This is where the opportunity gets structural. Kenya is already the leading destination for Ethiopian pulses, importing nearly 70% of Ethiopia's regional pulse exports — a live corridor that mirrors the Kigali–Kampala–Dar–Nairobi logic RACS is built around. But the continental picture remains under-traded: intra-African trade sits at just 14.4% of total African exports, and Africa's overall share of world exports is only about 2%. UNCTAD estimates that full AfCFTA implementation could lift intra-African trade by roughly 33% and cut the continent's trade deficit by 51%, unlocking an additional $9.2 billion in export potential through tariff liberalization alone. African exports currently sit an estimated $433.8 billion below potential — and agricultural processing is repeatedly flagged as one of the clearest levers to close that gap.


Kenya's canning-bean deficit is close to a textbook case: Ethiopian and Rwandan surplus feeding Kenyan and Tanzanian processing capacity, formalized under AfCFTA preferential tariffs, rather than routed to distant markets at a fraction of the value-add.


## Producer gaps and opportunities


**The gaps:**

- Seed access — improved navy bean cultivars are often unavailable locally, and imported certified seed carries a high cost premium

- Yield gap — in Rwanda, bush bean yield potential exceeds 2 tons/ha, but actual farmer yields sit around 0.8 tons/ha — a roughly 60% productivity shortfall

- Processing shortfall — Kenya's canning sector runs at roughly a third of installed capacity for lack of qualifying local supply

- Disease pressure — root rots (Pythium, Fusarium) and Angular Leaf Spot remain significant yield constraints on East African white bean genotypes

- Fragmented value chains — Ethiopia's haricot bean chain remains underdeveloped despite scale, with scattered suppliers and long market channels eroding the farm-gate share of FOB export prices

- Low farmer margin capture — contract farming dominates (Zimbabwe, South Africa), leaving growers largely as price-takers


**The opportunities:**

- Building canning and processing capacity closer to the farm-gate — Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania — to capture value currently exported raw

- Investing in disease-resistant, fast-cooking, biofortified seed systems that directly answer the fuel-cost pain point driving consumers toward canned formats

- Positioning African-origin navy beans as a Fairtrade-sourced, women's-cooperative-anchored alternative to US, Canadian, and Chinese supply into the UK's 359,000-ton annual bean market

## The takeaway


The small white bean is a case study in African agricultural value hiding in plain sight: a crop with proven yield potential, an 85-year-old canning trade already running through Tanzania, Kenya, and Ethiopia, and a demand curve — global and UK-specific — that is only accelerating. What's missing is not the crop. It's the processing capacity, the seed systems, and the intra-African trade corridors to keep more of the value on the continent that grows it.
